Abstract

I.     Introduction and Background/ why we are here

  1. As a partnership we are examining alternative ways of creating an organization. We will begin by designing this organization using critical methods/ thought processes and utilizing our collective knowledge base.
  2. Our organization is important to the design industry because we have the ability to bring innovative methods i.e. rapid prototyping using 3d scanning/ printing and CNC operations to some newly emerging fields in architecture.

II.     Description

  1. We will develop an organization or firm that can evaluate the needs of the markets while trying to find where our interests fit in the current and ever-evolving design world.
  2. As a team our interests lie with “adaptive architecture.” Daas states, “adaptive architecture is a phrase used to describe artifacts—and spaces—that respond either passively or actively to short and long term uncertainties in environmental, functional, economic and behavioral conditions” (Peeling the Design Onion, 3). As an organization we will produce concepts and components for:

i.     Wall Systems

ii.     Ceiling Systems

iii.     Floor Systems

iv.     Lighting Systems

v.     Occupant ID verification/ building security

III.     Case Studies in Practice

  1. Former Ball State students who founded ProjectiOne have taken on “adaptive architecture.” By examining their methods we have become educated about how to start a successful design organization while integrating it into the educational institution.

IV.     Methods/ Framework and Timeline

  1. Approach

i.     Understand design problem

ii.     Evaluate its relevance to what we do

iii.     Evaluate its relevance to the world (is it important enough to solve)

iv.     Evaluate the ways and means to bring about a solution

v.     Solve the design problem using the most appropriate method

  1. Timeline (Graphic to come)

i.     Fall 1st quarter- Become organized, Focus on Topic, Find appropriate advisors, Start abstract

ii.     2nd quarter- Examine knowledge base, Complete abstract, Focus on purpose

iii.     3rd quarter- Design our methods/ process

iv.     4th quarter- Test our methods

v.     Spring 1st quarter- Understand design problem, Create prototypes from methods

vi.     2nd quarter- Evaluate prototypes, Create new prototypes

vii.     3rd quarter- Refine prototypes, Present prototypes as possible solutions

viii.     Evaluate solutions and debrief thesis project, start working on solutions for new projects.
